At Arches we aim to create a positive learning environment, developed for each individual child using a range of strategies and techniques.
The age range of children in Arches is from the Foundation Stage through to Year two. The children in Arches need a little support in accessing the school day.
The children work towards national curriculum levels and the structure of the day is similar to most classes. Literacy and numeracy is taught in the morning and science, humanities, ICT and art in the afternoon through a termly topic. There are also opportunities to enjoy stories, play, explore and complete fun focused activities.
Reception children work towards achieving the Foundation Stage objective, Year 1 and Year 2 children follow the national curriculum.
Throughout every lesson additional social and communication skills are taught, which include additional group work: body awareness, language groups, time to talk, singing groups and PECS.
Teaching and activities are differentiated to meet each child's individual needs.
Children may also work with mainstream classes for designated lessons and informally visit classes to share or show their work.
We pride ourselves on our strong links with home. A home/school communication book is sent home every evening, a home school book at weekends and regular events are organised. Parents are always welcome to visit Arches, though we ask that an appointment is made to discuss specific issues.
Staff work hard to ensure all children are settled, happy and confident to learn.
