Geography Curriculum Intent
At Mersey Drive we believe that a high-quality Geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
Our Geography teaching will equip children with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human process. As pupils progress through our curriculum, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and the formation and uses of landscapes and environments.
The Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills that we teach at Mersey Drive will provide the framework and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
By the time our children complete their journey through our geography curriculum they will:
Have curiosity and understanding regarding the world and its diverse people, places, resources and environments
Have an understanding of the world around them
Have an awareness of the significant features of their local area
Have developed an interest in the world in which we live
Experienced a range of outdoor locations and activities
Have a knowledge of the world beyond their local area
Have built a strong grasp of locational knowledge
Be able to compare and contrast locations & environments
Be culturally aware
Be able to consider the impact of human geography on climate and ecosystems
Be able to use a range of sources to develop their knowledge and understanding
Be able to interpret and analyse data
We will achieve our aims by:
- Teaching creatively
- Fostering curiosity through experiential learning - exploration, investigation and practical field work
- Teaching through the outdoors
- Using enquiry based learning: children forming their own questions
- Using technology to ‘open up’ the world beyond our classrooms
- Engaging with visitors from different cultures
