History Curriculum Intent

At Mersey Drive we believe that a high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our History curriculum will inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past, help children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. We aim to equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.

By the time our children complete their journey through our curriculum they will:

Have curiosity and understanding about the past

Know their place in time

Have a chronologically secure knowledge of significant key elements of British and World history

Understand the cause and effects of key events in time

Recognise and know about a diverse range of significant figures (of local, national or global importance)

Know how British history has been influenced, and has influenced others

Be able to use sources to gain knowledge

Be able to critically analyse sources (including identifying propaganda)

Ask historically valid questions

Understand diverse societies

Be critical thinkers

We will achieve our aims by:

  • Teaching creatively
  • Fostering curiosity through experiential learning
  • Using enquiry based learning: children forming their own questions
  • Teaching the ‘thought process: e.g. modelling critical thinking and questioning
  • Creating ‘Living History’ through role-play and drama
  • Use of and exposure to a range of historical sources and artefacts
